Isha i ri atëherë, vuaja nga uria dhe nga pija, por mundohesha të bëhesha shkrimtar. Shumicën e leximeve i bëja tek Biblioteka Publike L. A.. Por asgjë ndër ato që lexoja s’kishte lidhje me mua, ose me rrugët a me njerëzit rreth meje. Kisha përshtypjen se të gjithë bënin marifete me fjalën; ndërsa të gjithë ata që nuk thoshin asgjë, kinse konsideroheshin shkrimtarë të mëdhenj. Shkrimet e këtyre ishin një çorbë poshtërsie, zejtarie dhe lustre, dhe të gjitha lexoheshin, mësoheshin, treteshin dhe jashtëqiteshin.
